So I have tried like three times to write a post this week about how things are going. Sometimes I’d be in the middle of a sentence, decide “Ugh, I can’t even put this into type-able words,” say eff it and close down the Firefox window. I probably have a few drafts but anyway.
The good news: our new payroll system actually spit out paychecks. The paychecks were delivered Friday at 4:45 pm by the salesman who sold us the new system. And, unbelievably, 1500 paychecks in one box does not exactly equal orderly. So then D, Gwen, Salesman and I gathered around and got them all sorted to make sure we had all of them. We did (pretty much!) so I drove them to FedEx last night. To say the least, I am afraid to go track them. If it says they were not picked up, I will be very sad. And the box I dropped all 40+ envelopes into hadn’t been picked up when I put them in the box, so I am going to assume I’m in the clear.
I’m also freaking pooped. Every day but Monday this week I’ve arrived at work before 8 (yeah, I know, WAHHH – but I usually work 9-6) and hit the ground running. Sometimes literally – I really needed rollerskates on Thursday and Friday for the path between Gwen’s office and my desk because whenever possible I really did run. The rep from the payroll company was supposed to be in our building Tuesday-Thursday but instead was on the phone with us (for hoooooours) Tuesday and Wednesday and in person on Thursday and part of Friday.
It’s an understatement if I say that we were a little behind most of the week. The set up of a new system is always difficult – there will always be some little issue that pops up, some little feature that is REALLY not a feature (example: instead of being able to print to, oh, I dunno, a PRINTER I can usually only print to a PDF file. Dumb dumb dumb). And of course there is always a parade of regular day to day stuff – W-2 requests, child support paperwork, etc and none of that takes a holiday.
Good things: I know for a FACT that there is a check with my name on it waiting for pay day. Gwen appreciates all of my hard work (even when I had to leave for 2 hours in the thick of things yesterday). The company realizes how hard I work (leftover appreciation from Payroll Week, I think).
And the new payroll system is AWESOME. No more bullshit where people aren’t paid minimum wage. (Oh, please let that be true…)
Next week, life goes back to normal. 9 AM arrival, 6 PM dismissal. I may even get to take a lunch hour (a luxury I haven’t had all week).
